This Saturday part design lab, part social experiment DeLab returned to one of Hollywood Hills most eclectic hideouts for Obscura Day (an international “day of expeditions, back-room tours and hidden treasures in your hometown”). The “tile house” as it is known by locals was hand crafted over40 years by former professional wrestler, actor and carpenter for the studios George Ehling . A self-taught mosaic maker, Ehling’s 1927 home has been transformed by discarded wine and beer bottle bottles and surplus tile scraps into a local landmark. Inspired by Roman, Byzantine, Renaissance and Moorish mosaics Ehling’s work covers a range of designs from simple, repetitive motifs to complex portraits (including a self-portrait). Thank you again DeLab and George Ehling for another great Obscura Day.
